The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman has said many times that he admires the work of George A. Romero, and issue 171 put that love on display.

Robert Kirkman isn’t shy about saying what the driving influence was for him behind creating The Walking Dead. In the past, he has heaped praise onto George A. Romero and Night of the Living Dead as being what got him to fall in love with zombie culture.

Sadly, that love wasn’t always returned by Romero. The legendary director saw Kirkman’s show as more of a soap opera than a take on society, but that never bothered the creator of AMC’s zombie drama too much, as he continued to create content adored by millions of people around the world.

However, when issue 171 of The Walking Dead was released, it was obvious just how much Kirkman truly was influenced by Romero’s work in the genre in both the comic itself and the commentary at the end of the book.

More from Undead Walking

In the book titled ‘Fear The Princess’, Michonne turns to an empty city of Pittsburgh and lets out a loud scream, wondering if she would stir any walkers or living creatures in the nearby area.

Kirkman explained in the Letter Hacks section of his comic that Michonne’s actions were a direct homage to a scene from the beginning of the original Dawn of the Dead, where Philadelphia was the backdrop instead of Pittsburgh.

But Kirkman wasn’t done there. In a statement that ran for nearly an entire page, the creator of The Walking Dead spoke about just how much he loves Romero’s films and how the zombie apocalypse fans love in the pages of Image Comics and see on AMC wouldn’t exist without his influence.
