Fear The Walking Dead is edging toward the season 3 finale but many people didn’t make it out of episode 13.

Until now Fear The Walking Dead has been pretty light on deaths this season. That changed in “This Land Is Your Land”. The more appropriate question for this episode is who didn’t die?

Well, none of the main characters died, so that’s something. But Broke Jaw Ranch is officially done now because none of the ranchers managed to survive.

A lot of the infected were killed when Troy and Nick tried to clear out the ranch, and then later on when Madison, Strand, and Walker arrived back at the ranch. But the bulk of the deaths in this episode happened inside the pantry where Alicia, Ofelia, Crazy Dog and the others had run for sanctuary.

What unfolded inside that pantry changed the ranch, and Alicia, forever. The ranch is gone and Alicia will never be the same after almost dying herself from lack of oxygen and having to kill so many of the ranchers.

The Bitten

Trapped inside the pantry with the air running out Alicia took control of the situation and asked those who had been bitten to basically volunteer to commit suicide in order to save air for the people who hadn’t been bitten. It was the logical thing to do. And those who were bitten knew it. But knowing it’s the right option didn’t make it easier for Alicia to carry out the killing of the bitten.

Each one was dosed with enough morphine to kill them. And when they died they were stabbed in the brain to prevent them from turning. Then the bodies were piled together. It was a gruesome visual to see but it underscored the horror of what Alicia had to do in order to save the others.

Blake, who helped her carry out the executions, was also one of the bitten. Sorry, we didn’t get to know you better Blake, you seemed like a stand-up guy.

The Ranchers

Unfortunately, Ofelia and Crazy Dog weren’t able to get to the vent and clear it before the oxygen ran out. Alicia went in and out of consciousness. But most of the ranchers who were left died. And of course, they turned. Only half conscious herself Alicia had to fight off the dead ranchers who turned in droves. With some impressive knife skills and the help of a cache of guns and ammo in the pantry, she managed to save herself.

But she couldn’t save Christine, the nice older woman who shared stories with Alicia and made her promise that she would never make decisions out of fear. Christine died and Alicia had to put her down too.

The Body Count Was Too Much For Alicia

In the end, Madison, Strand, Walker, Nick, and Troy managed to free Alicia, Crazy Dog, and Ofelia. But having to be the one to kill so many people took a heavy toll on Alicia. She refused to go to the dam with the others and instead took off for the place that Jake had mentioned to her.

“This Land Is Your Land” probably had one of the highest body counts of any episode that Fear The Walking Dead has done. And most of those deaths were at Alicia’s hands. Hopefully, she will be able to process the ordeal and return to her family at some point.
