At New York Comic Con, Robert Kirkman assured fans that the ending of the popular zombie survival drama series isn’t coming anytime soon.

Over the summer there was a small dust-up when some websites claimed that Robert Kirkman had announced the end of The Walking Dead comic. At a New York Comic Con panel, Kirkman clarified once and for all that the hit comic book series isn’t ending anytime soon.

According to Comicbook, Kirkman said that final chapter of The Walking Dead  is “hundreds if not thousands of issues away.” He also said, “I did not announce the end of The Walking Dead, I just know what the end will be.”

That’s a big relief for fans, who have kept The Walking Dead TV show the number one show on cable for years. AMC remains committed to the show and it’s hard to imagine the network would be pulling the plug on the show as long as there is still so much source material in the comics to use for the TV show.

But does that mean that Rick Grimes, Michonne, or any of the other characters that fans adore are safe? Unfortunately not.

Rick’s Survival Odds

Fans have come to accept that no one in AMC’s The Walking Dead world is safe at any time. The deaths of Abraham and Atlanta original Glenn in the season 7 premiere proved even the most beloved characters will fall eventually.

But it’s hard to imagine the show without stalwart Rick Grimes. Would the show really continue without his leadership of the Alexandria survivors? Absolutely it would. During the NYCC panel when discussing Rick’s survival odds Kirkman reiterated that no one is ever safe.

Even Rick Grimes.

Sure, he’s survived some horrific things. But there’s always the chance that he’s not going to survive the next encounter with a big bad or that a careless move out in the open will get him killed by a walker.

Talking about Rick’s longevity Kirkman told the audience:

"“No one is safe. Hopefully there have been points where you go, ‘Is this it? Is this where Rick dies?’ And he doesn’t. One day, the moment will come where you go, ‘Oh my god, it is!’ …It could happen any time between now and 50 years from now. 50 years, that’s not gonna happen…”"

Fans have speculated for years that at the end of the story Carl will be the one left standing after losing Rick and all the others he loves so much. Thankfully, the end of The Walking Dead isn’t going to happen for a long time so there will be plenty of time to speculate about how long Rick will survive and who will be left at the end.
