Who died in Fear The Walking Dead episode 314 ‘El Matadero’?

Fear The Walking Dead keeps upping the ante this season when it comes to major character deaths. Another major character fell just before the season 3 finale.

Fear The Walking Dead may have a fairly low body count this season. But what it lacks in numbers it makes up for in emotional deaths. In the season premiere, Travis died. Then, at the ranch, Jeremiah Otto died. Last week Jake Otto was lost.

And this week another original character didn’t make it. Ofelia Salazar tragically died before she and her father could be reunited. It turns out that Ofelia was bitten when she and Crazy Dog were trying to clear the air duct in the pantry. The sickness took her quickly and she died just as Daniel Salazar was arriving at the bazaar.

All season long fans have been waiting for the reunion between Daniel and his daughter Ofelia. But that reunion just wasn’t meant to be. At least Daniel did know she was alive. And Ofelia knew that Daniel was alive. But that didn’t make it easier to watch Daniel’s anguish as he realized that he missed his chance to reunite with his daughter.

It’s always difficult to lose a main character, especially an original character. But Ofelia had a great arc and she died as a result of actions she took to save the others. In the post-apocalypse world that’s the only good death that’s possible.

Ofelia’s Journey

When Ofelia was first introduced she was by design a sheltered girl who didn’t know much about herself or about the world. Daniel wanted that for her and wanted to protect her from the world. And from the knowledge of what he did in his past and how dangerous the world could be.

After finding out about her father’s past and seeing a side of him she had never seen before she was lost. And then when she thought Daniel died she could have fallen apart and just accepted death. But she didn’t.

She went on her own. And she fought for her life and even risked the horrors of the desert trying desperately to find a life for herself. When Walker found her she was reborn as a warrior. Even though Daniel never wanted her to be a fighter and never wanted her to live in such a terrible world she conquered her fears and become truly Daniel’s daughter. With all the strength and ferocity that was naturally part of her thanks to her father she survived and became a leader in many ways.

The Unsaid Goodbye

It is tragic that Daniel and Ofelia never got the reunion they deserved. But it’s also a reminder that in that world things can change in minutes. Even though just a couple of days elapsed between when Walker and Madison went for water and when they returned that’s all it took for things to change forever.

Ofelia Salazar had a great journey. And she will be missed. But hopefully, no more major characters will die in the two-hour season 3 finale of Fear The Walking Dead next week.
