4. Every character who tried to go after Negan on their own

This one is a group package because it is difficult to differentiate between these equally ill-inspired solo/duo rogue missions to try to kill Negan.

Carl’s solo raid on the Sanctuary

Carl going into the Sanctuary by himself (and making sure that he wouldn’t even get any help from Jesus) cannot be described as a clever decision by any stretch of the imagination. Sure, it gave us some of the best scenes in season 7, so we’re glad that Carl once again took unnecessary risks. But honestly, what was he thinking?

At least, though, Carl had the excuse of being a hot-headed teenager. This cannot be said about Rosita and Sasha, who are both adults and who both have enough experience living in the apocalypse to know better.

Rosita and Sasha’s solo-turned-duo rogue mission… What was the plan?

Rosita’s desperate attempt at killing Negan with the bullet Eugene made for her was actually more reasonable than her later attempt at infiltrating the Sanctuary with Sasha. If only she hadn’t been extraordinarily out of luck, she might have succeeded in killing Negan… And then, who knows what might have happened? Would the Saviors even know what to do without their charismatic, despotic leader?

The mission Rosita and Sasha went on together at the end of the season, however, made very little sense. If only they had bothered to pay attention to their surroundings, Rosita and Sasha would have realized that both Rick and Maggie were ready to take up arms. The only possible outcome of going rogue as they did was to undermine everyone else’s efforts by tipping off the Saviors that something was amiss.

Let’s give up a perfectly save sniper position to… storm the Sanctuary?

At least, if they had kept to their initial “sniper” approach, Sasha might actually have taken out Negan from a distance. However, their inexplicable decision to leave their vantage point after only one failed attempt, and try to enter the Sanctuary instead, just cannot be explained rationally. Sure, the Saviors were about to scout the buildings, but couldn’t they have hidden for a while and given it another try? The only explanation for this poor decision was, once again, their impatience.

In their defense, both Sasha and Rosita had a good reason to want to kill Negan and to lose patience: they’d both lost a lover when Negan picked Abraham as the first victim to be sacrificed to Lucille’s wrath. Still, it is hard not to draw a comparison between them and Maggie. Maggie was just as eager to get revenge and had lost just as much, but she didn’t just go on a suicide mission by herself. Maggie took time to plan her revenge, taking control of the Hilltop and gathering potential allies so the future mission against Negan did not turn into yet another disaster.
