After Beth is kidnapped, leaving Daryl on his own in the middle of nowhere, she wakes up in a hospital. She’s being treated by a friendly doctor who has a gun pointed – figuratively – at his head. Soon Beth realizes that the hospital operates in a complex system of workers and overlords. The overlords are Atlanta police officers who have established a system where they have wards who take care of the hospital chores and also take care of their own personal interests.

Beth becomes the ward to Grady’s leader, Dawn. Dawn is a complex character who is torn between her sense of duty and the knowledge that the only way to maintain peace is to make sure her officers are happy. This often means looking the other way when bad things happen. Beth sees what’s going on and she questions Dawn about it, but Beth also has to fall in line to save herself. Beth meets Noah, a fellow ward, who helps her learn the system. He also has a plan to escape and he’s willing to take her with him, but only at the right time.
