The biggest death to date on AMC’s The Walking Dead is looming, and Andrew Lincoln had a special goodbye message for Chandler Riggs.

It’s never easy to say goodbye to a beloved character on The Walking Dead. But saying goodbye to Carl Grimes is going to be the toughest goodbye yet.

Chandler Riggs’ last episode playing Carl Grimes airs on Sunday, Feb 25th. With Chandler’s final performance airing in just a couple of days Andrew Lincoln had a special musical message for his on-screen son, via Entertainment Weekly.

In typical Andrew Lincoln fashion, the message is both funny and sentimental. In the beginning, Lincoln mentions that he will never have to say “Coral” again.

But he will probably still mention Carl in the future because Carl has left long letters for both Rick and Michonne and it’s likely that Carl’s final words will have a big impact on how Rick moves forward. You can watch the video here.

Saying Goodbye

When Carl revealed his walker bite in The Walking Dead midseason finale many fans were in shock. The winter hiatus of the show gave fans time to process the inevitable death of Carl Grimes and gave Scott Gimple and the producers time to explain their decision. But it’s still not sitting well with many fans.

In The Walking Dead comic Carl is very much alive and this is the largest deviation from the source material that the show has taken. A huge number of fans had assumed that Carl Grimes would be the ultimate survivor of the apocalypse and that at the end of the series Carl would be shown telling the stories of Rick and the other survivors. Now the future of the show is wide open, which is both exciting but devastating for fans.

Looking Ahead

As a result of the shocking death of Carl, fans are approaching the midseason premiere with a lot of mixed emotions. The Walking Dead midseason premiere, “Honor” is going to be an emotionally difficult episode for many fans to watch as they watch Carl move through his final day on Earth writing letters to his loved ones, taking photos with Judith, and trying to spend as much time with her as possible so she will remember her big brother.

But Carl’s death will be the catalyst that takes Rick to a mindset more savage than he’s ever displayed before. He will channel all his anger and grief into bringing down Negan and The Saviors for good and killing Negan. It will be very exciting to see Rick fight when he really has nothing left to lose. The end of All Out War is coming and it’s going to be thrilling.

The Walking Dead midseason premiere is on Sunday, February 25th on AMC.
