Eugene is Negan on The Walking Dead but is he Rick too?

Eugene proved he can adapt and change, but not always for the better. On the most recent episode of The Walking Dead, he may have unintentionally provided Negan with his most diabolical idea yet.

Eugene is Negan, currently. He’s been living at The Sanctuary during the eighth season of AMC’s The Walking Dead and is seemingly comfortable in his position of power within The Saviors organization.

In the beginning of his stay, he was terrified (to say the least) while clutching the infamous jar of pickles. Turns out Eugene had nothing to fear, yet.

He witnessed the murders of several Alexandrians by the terrifying leader of The Saviors and dreaded he was next. Rehashing his guaranteed lifeline, he lied to Negan about his work on the Human Genome Project and Negan believed every word with the most amused grin.

Negan originally bestowed Eugene with the task of making bullets and ironically episode 811 Dead or Alive or was the first time we see the man behind the mullet do just that. Eugene begins working, enlisting the help of several other Saviors and requesting wine (his most recent method of coping with his current inner struggles).

He had previously taken the duties as a temporary doctor when Dr. Carson was deposed of thanks to Dwight’s false claims he was at fault for Sherry’s escape in season 7. Another lie that Negan bought.

Thankfully for Eugene, he didn’t keep that title for long as Dr. Carson’s brother Harlan was fetched from The Hilltop. However, as we saw on Sunday he was killed while trying to return home with Father Gabriel to help Maggie with her pregnancy.

Father Gabriel believed it was his purpose to help Maggie by leaving with Dr. Harlan Carson.

The doctor’s death (a truly unforgiving pattern on The Walking Dead) crushed Father Gabriel’s spirit but hopefully not his faith. We see Frankie, one of Negan’s wives, attempting to help. looking less glamorous than the last time we saw her. However, Eugene was quick to deny her request.

When Negan decided to make a surprise visit with Father Gabriel he wasn’t thrilled about the slow-moving progress. Even if Negan refuses to admit it, he’s racing the clock and time has not been on his side.

Eugene is terrified at the sight, already on thin ice as the one responsible for Father Gabriel and Harlan’s escape and feared Negan already suspected him. Even though a recaptured Father Gabriel lied it was Harlan who helped him escape Eugene wasn’t out of the woods yet.

Afraid to further anger the unpredictable leader Eugene fumbled to find an alternative solution, “We could rig several medieval-style catapults. Start launching undead arms, legs, torso, over their defenses, maybe heads or you know big piles of guts.”

Just like that, Eugene had provided Negan with the answer to his unending problem. Before more fans dislike Eugene the show has proved time and time again silence and expressions speak louder than words.

Eugene’s grimace once Negan turned his back and left the room spoke volumes. Is he truly on Negan’s side while hating him?

Is he disgusted with himself knowing he chose Negan? Or does he have bigger plans up his sleeves?

If Eugene was truly Negan he wouldn’t have helped Father Gabriel and Dr. Harlan Carson escape and certainly wouldn’t be trying to drown his problems away in liquor. Dwight’s harsh words from their last meeting and Father Gabriel’s encouragement may be enough to bring Eugene back to Rick.

Eugene’s plans may have to change again as Dwight has returned to The Sanctuary. Will he and Eugene be at odds again?

Next: Dwight is playing The Saviors

Will Eugene remain Negan or return to Rick in upcoming episodes of The Walking Dead? Next Sunday’s episode is looking grim for Rick but possibly great for The Saviors as Negan so elegantly put it, “Big day tomorrow”.
