Dwight’s character has undergone a lot of development since we first met him and his wife Sherry in season 6 of The Walking Dead. Pledging himself to Simon, has Dwight turned on Rick and Negan or is has he become a triple agent?

There is something about Dwight that audiences cannot put their finger on. He’s by far the most elusive character on The Walking Dead (surpassing Eugene when we didn’t know if he was Negan or Rick).

While it was evidenced that he and his wife Sherry were happily married before they became members of Negan’s Sanctuary; he still allowed her to marry Negan in order to save his life.

Their failed escape put Dwight back in the Savior seat in comfort (compared to those working for ‘points’) while Sherry miserably paraded around in a black dress until Negan presented himself. It wasn’t until Sherry left (enabling Daryl to escape) that we saw the beginnings of Dwight’s betrayal.

Dwight has already proven his loyalty to Rick multiple times. He literally offered his help during the season 7 finale much to Daryl and Tara’s distrust.

Throughout the season 8, he had given Rick and the group the opportunity to take out Savior outposts on the same day. But did Negan suspect Dwight’s betrayal?

Some fans speculate that he does as witnessed in the beginning of ‘The Key’. It’s the first time in a little while we’ve seen Negan converse with Dwight one to one.

Negan had been confiding in his right-hand man, Simon. However it appears that relationship went from solid to strained to currently non-existent. Dwight’s standing on thin ice and his attempt to try to warn Rick of the Saviors new war tactic (covering their weapons in walker guts) is noteworthy.

Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to talk his way out of riding with Simon. When Simon took charge of The Saviors Dwight was hesitant to follow.

We knew that Negan was still alive and Dwight probably believed he was still alive somewhere and will come back. It’s astonishing how even with Negan missing he’s able to instill fear in Dwight to the point he’s afraid to side with Simon.

More from Undead Walking

Taking the risk Dwight joined Simon as they attacked The Hilltop on last week’s episode ‘Do Not Send Us Astray’. Dwight tried to convince Simon to change his mind reminding him that Negan was still out there.

When Simon refused Dwight’s options diminished.

His loyalty to Rick presented itself again saving Tara by shooting her before Simon using (what many are suggesting to be) a clean arrow. The episode ended with Tara still alive and showing no signs of getting sick, unlike the unfortunate bunch who did.

It would be interesting to see Dwight kill Simon to save face when Negan does return. Negan knows of Simon’s massacre of The Scavengers and undoubtedly will not forgive him for it.

This would also take one more top Savior out of the equation. If we did our math right, Dwight would be the only top Savior left.

The only way Dwight would be caught is if Laura returned and if Eugene snitches. But since Laura remains missing and Eugene is preoccupied with making bullets, Dwight is in the clear.

For now.
