Fear the Walking Dead is back with a new look, including new opening credits. Why we ought to pay attention to these new credits in the future.

Now that we’re two episodes into Fear the Walking Dead season 4, we can start talking about trends we see from week to week. Of note are the new opening credits, which have been different two weeks in a row. We had a chance to talk to Fear the Walking Dead showrunners Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg prior to the start of the season and they said that there is a lot that can be gleaned from the opening credits, and that fans should keep an eye on them.

Chambliss and Goldberg come to Fear the Walking Dead after working on ABC’s Once Upon a Time, where the opening credits changed each week along with the story. Both showrunners are huge fans of The Walking Dead universe, and while there might not be a correlation between Fear’s changing credits and those seen on OUAT, there’s no question that fans should watch them for clues.

In the season premiere episode 401, “What’s Your Story?”, the opening credits featured a nighttime scene with a man and a campfire. If you didn’t know better, it looked a lot like John Dorie’s campfire.

This week, in “Another Day in the Diamond,” the credits feature an early evening scene with a caravan of RVs driving along. Could that caravan be the approaching Vultures?

One possible theory behind the opening credits is that the season premiere was set in The Walking Dead season 8 “present,” thus the nighttime setting. “Another Day in the Diamond” was set in the indeterminate past and then caught up to the “present” at the end of the episode, so that would be early evening. The moment the apocalypse began, way back in Los Angeles, would be considered dawn, and the season 3 events at the dam would be about mid-morning. We’re still missing a big chunk of time from when Madison woke up after the dam explosion, which would fill out most of the day. Therefore, morning, midday and nighttime could have some kind of significance.

We definitely need to keep an eye on next week’s “Good Out Here” for the next batch of clues. Whether the new credits are foreshadowing the upcoming episode, or whether they signal something larger, remains to be seen.
