Over the past few weeks fans have wondered where Madison could be on Fear the Walking Dead. The group’s guilt might provide the answer.

As we move toward the midseason finale on Fear the Walking Dead there’s one big question looming: Where is Madison? While she has been seen in the past, she’s the only person who hasn’t caught up to the group in the present. Though she could very easily be dead already, there’s something about the way Strand, Alicia and Luciana are acting that make it seem like something else happened. They don’t look like they’re mourning Madison, rather they seem guilty about something.

Back in “Buried” the three remaining survivors told Al the story of that one day at the Stadium that could have changed everything. Strand could have taken his truck full of supplies and left with Cole. Alicia learned from Naomi that you can’t settle and always have to be prepared to run. And Nick and Luciana found a book of maps and were ready to pick a new home and head off into the apocalyptic sunset. If they had left that day, they reasoned, Nick would still be alive.

If you look closely, they’re clearly mourning Nick’s death while they have an entirely different look when they talk about Madison. They don’t have the look of resignation that you’d expect if they knew she was dead. When Alicia told John that Naomi was dead, it was more of a “she’s dead to me” vibe than anything else. Lo and behold, Naomi is indeed alive.

It’s entirely possible, given Madison’s history of making questionable decisions, that the group made a decision to leave her behind? Perhaps Madison made a bad decision, and the group mutinied and decided to leave. Perhaps whatever happened is tied to Naomi, and that’s why Alicia was so upset with her. Maybe Naomi convinced Madison to make an unfavorable decision, and they couldn’t agree as a group so they left. Or maybe the Vultures had something to do with it, too, and that could explain Nick’s anger toward Ennis.

There’s hope that we’ll find out more about Madison’s whereabout soon, but until then my money is on her being alive.
