Michael Rooker, one of the most beloved former members of The Walking Dead cast, channeled one of his characters prior to having surgery.

Fans of The Walking Dead know Michael Rooker as Merle Dixon, Daryl’s older brother. In other circles Rooker is known as Yondu from the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. While he plays some outlandish characters on television and in the movies, he’s as boisterous in real life as the characters he plays. Case in point, Rooker channeled his old pal Yondu while getting ready for his recent shoulder surgery.

Michael Rooker is unpredictable and always entertaining, so it’s no surprise that the actor was having fun during pre-op while getting ready for shoulder surgery. According to his social media post Rooker was in the hospital to repair a bicep tendon, and he assured fans that he would be just fine.

Part of his pre-op antics included mugging for the camera in his sunglasses while sporting a surgical cap that he modified to resemble his blue-headed alter ego Yondu. Though he isn’t smiling, Rooker’s mirth shines through in his stoic gaze. (The blue cap does make him resemble Yondu, though)

Rooker is a fan favorite at pop culture conventions, drawing large crowds of photograph and autograph seekers who line up to meet the exuberant and always entertaining actor. Though he’s no longer part of The Walking Dead cast, he still has legions of fans who look back fondly at Rooker’s antics as the troubled older Dixon brother. Rooker reprised his role in The Robot Chicken Walking Dead Special: Look Who’s Walking, voicing not only Merle Dixon but also Lucille’s father.
