A new issue of The Walking Dead comics was released on August 1. 2018 showing more from the story of The Commonwealth checking out the communities to see if they have anything to offer or to possibly join their settlement.

So much happened in this issue and a complete breakdown of the issue is here! However, it is highly advised that you be caught up or at least have read the recap of last month’s issue to ensure everything makes sense. With that said, let’s get started!

***WARNING: FULL SPOILERS FROM TWD 182 BELOW***

The issue kicks off outside The Sanctuary, where people are collecting tomatoes. John stops to smell one and Christopher asks why he does that. He replies that he’s proud of what they’ve done at the community and wants to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

Next, John is asked if they can go shooting today, to which John replies that this job with the fruit is very important as well. The Sanctuary can protect itself, but it also needs people skilled in growing things.

Christopher says he doesn’t even like tomatoes, but John reminds him they don’t live in a world of ‘like’ anymore and they need to focus on their needs. He continues, talking about how proud he is that the community is growing so much food for themselves

Next, Christopher brings up the food they get from Alexandria and Oceanside, but John says they work hard to gather lumber and other things to trade for that food, making their community valuable down the road. And he reminds Christopher that they are thriving, not living in fear like under Negan as he looked directly at Mark.

Just as Christopher asks if he can have a baked potato tonight, the announcement comes that visitors have arrived. Rick opens the door for Pamela, who says The Sanctuary doesn’t seem inviting. Rick explains that it used to be much worse.

Mercer is talking to Rick about the patrols between the communities, impressed that the routes are mostly clear. Rick says they aren’t always great and sometimes things happen like what happened with the swarm, but for the most part, they’re good.

Curious, Mercer wanted to know more about the survivors choosing what they want to do. Rick says what they did before the outbreak isn’t of consequence unless it’s a skill that can be beneficial, like Earl as a blacksmith. He also asks Rick what he did before the outbreak, learning that he was a police officer.

Rick asks Mercer what he did before. He explained that he used to be a Marine and was home on leave when everything went to hell. He says he’s happy busting heads, but some others aren’t living their lives to the fullest.

The group arrives at The Hilltop and Rick is impressed to see the rebuild coming along so quickly. Dwight is in awe over how the buildings are structurally in place and they are greeted at the gates by Maggie and Dante, who explain that they’ve been working hard and the help from William was amazing.

Pamela says she was told this community was burned to the ground, to which Maggie wonders who she is. Just as he was introducing Pamela to Maggie, Carl shouts out for his dad, throws off his blacksmith gloves, and runs over to hug Rick.

The two stay behind to talk about losing Andrea while Maggie continues the tour with Maggie, Dante, Maxwell, and Mercer. Carl says he missed Rick and was worried about him.  Explaining his situation, Carl says he wanted to help with the rebuild but didn’t want to leave if he needed help, to which Rick says he needed a little time for himself.

Carl is impressed that his dad isn’t using his cane anymore. Rick explains that the pain has subsided and he feels it is no longer necessary, even if he won’t be speedy on foot.

Maggie is justifiably skeptical about The Commonwealth. She wants to know what their role will be in their lives. Pamela says it’s more about trading and improving all communities involved, but Maggie doesn’t trust the political smile by Pamela.

Rick tells Maggie to calm down and that she’s acting rude to the guests, which causes Maggie to erupt.

Jesus asks about their life there, and Rick replies that they have never had to rebuild due to fire and Michonne is still there. Maggie gasps, asking if she’s a prisoner there while Pamela explains that she found her daughter and she chose to stay behind.

With Rick heading to The Commonwealth next, Maggie says to give it the smell test. If he likes what he sees, they will stand with him.

Eugene has acquired a wagon to help the travels to faster and be more comfortable. Rick spots a bag of items and asks what they are for, but Eugene doesn’t want to spoil the surprise.

Heath’s group heads back to Alexandria to take care of things there while the rest of the group presses on. Dwight tells him they will check in if it appears they will be gone for more than a month.

Pamela offers to let Rick ride with her while Maxwell takes his horse. She asks him about Carl’s eye and learns that he was shot. Rick explains that they keep children away from the front line of battle, but their conflicts didn’t always happen in a way to keep everyone safe, to which Pamela says she hopes those days are over.

She says she has no doubt that he is Commonwealth material but needs to understand their way of living to come over. He says he believes they could come over to his community’s way of thinking, opening up the discussion again while the issue comes to a close.
