The Walking Dead’s Jeffrey Dean Morgan is starring in upcoming film Walkaway Joe, a project that originally saw its origins in Feb. 8, 2015 script wise.

Walkaway Joe starring TWD’s Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Julie Ann Emery [Better Call Saul], David Strathairn [The Blacklist], Andrea Frankle [The Purge], Susan Gallagher [Cobra Kai], Wayne Pére [American Horror Story], and Julian Feder [Community] among its versatile cast, which started filming recently on Sept. 30, 2018. However, the project has been in the works since early 2015, with a script penned by Michael Milillo [Grey’s Anatomy]. Jeffrey Dean Morgan will play pool hustler Cal McCarthy, with Julian Feder playing son Dallas McCarthy, and David Strathairn playing drifter Joe Haley, who reluctantly feels a responsibility to take Dallas in for his own safety.

Deadline reports the film sees ‘Dallas taking his bicycle to find his pool-hustling father, who had abandoned their family,’ so while Morgan seems to remain kind of a Negan villain type… It looks like he won’t be the father type he was to The Walking Dead’s Carl Grimes in this movie!

Walkaway Joe: Plot Summary by screenwriter Michael Milillo:

"In the tradition of American classics, Walkaway JOE is the story of an unlikely friendship between a young boy searching for his father, and a wandering loner hiding from his past. In each other they experience the power of a second chance, and a shot at redemption."

The film is being directed by actor Tom Wright, his first official directing credit. Walkaway Joe is being filmed in two locations: LaPlace, Louisiana and Hamilton, Ohio. According to Deadline, production began at the St. John the Baptist Parish over in LaPlace in Louisiana. The film is being produced by Los Angeles based SwingLake Entertainment.

It’s unclear at this time if there’s necessarily any influence by country singer Trisha Yearwood’s song of the same name, first released in 1992 (with background vocals by Don Henley of The Eagles). Yearwood’s “Walkaway Joe” once reached #2 on the Billboard charts for the country category. Perhaps, the song might make an appearance in the film as Merle Haggard & The Strangers’ “Mama Tried” did in 2008’s The Strangers?
