The reveal that Rosita is pregnant with Siddiq’s baby makes for a complicated “love square” that may shift relationships moving forward.

Love is complicated. Love in the apocalypse is even more complicated. Love in the apocalypse between multiple people with a baby in the mix is possibly the most complicated thing one will deal with. Rosita finds herself in this exact situation in season 9 of The Walking Dead after revealing that she is in fact pregnant with Siddiq’s baby.

A baby is certainly something to celebrate, but the show seems to be focusing on the awkward situation involving the three men in Rosita’s life currently. As revealed during episode 909, Rosita and Siddiq had a series of hookups during the time jump that resulted in the conception of this baby. Sometime later, Rosita and Father Gabriel formed their romantic relationship and things seem to be in a good place between them. The question remains of whether Rosita has shared the news of her pregnancy with Gabriel or not.

Gabriel is someone who deeply cares about his people and the fact that Rosita is pregnant with someone else’s child probably won’t matter to him. That being said, there is the possibility that the romantic relationship may form some cracks and could be tested moving forward. Gabriel previously had a fling with Anne earlier this season…and it didn’t exactly end well. Both he and Rosita appear to be genuinely happy based on the scene that revealed their relationship in episode 906. While Gabriel clearly couldn’t trust Anne, his interaction with Negan regarding Rosita shows that he isn’t suspicious of her.

We really don’t know much in regards to the extent of Rosita and Siddiq’s relationship that resulted in this pregnancy. Based on their dialogue, it seems as though it may have just been them having some fun together and letting off steam. Therefore, one could assume that Siddiq isn’t jealous about Rosita being with Gabriel. Siddiq is a good guy and is someone who likes to help out wherever he can. Obviously, the birth is still a ways away, but it would make sense that Siddiq would have a heavy hand in raising the baby; assuming the baby is actually born. Having Rosita, Gabriel, and Siddiq co-parent would make for a really interesting subplot. After all, the children born in this apocalypse are raised by the community and group as a whole; take Judith for example.

Eugene is the real wild card in this mix. It is clear that he is in love with Rosita. He very likely has been for a while. In both episodes 906 and 909, he came extremely close to expressing his love, but Rosita shut it down before he could. While Rosita could potentially have romantic feelings toward him, it has always seemed that she views him more as a brother. They have been through so much together since long before they were even introduced in the story. Eugene appeared extremely shocked and somewhat disappointed upon overhearing Rosita’s pregnancy news. Will he now suppress his feelings or is it possible that Eugene will try to interfere with Rosita’s other relationships? Looking back in the story, Eugene has taken some extreme measures in the past to get what he wants.

Rosita now finds herself in a complicated place. Not only is the threat of the Whisperers bearing down on herself and her family, she is also involved in a love square. This isn’t the first time she’s been in a situation like this. Back in season 6, Abraham brutally broke up with Rosita to be with Sasha. This created tension that was enhanced after Negan killed Abraham, but fortunately Rosita and Sasha resolved their differences in the end. This current plot also parallels that of season 2 between Rick, Lori, and Shane; this also involved a pregnancy. Here’s hoping Rosita’s love square doesn’t end as tragically as that one did.

Rosita is one of the most independent and strong-willed characters on the show currently. She obviously can survive without being in a relationship, but everyone deserves to be in love…especially in the apocalypse. With how unpredictable the show is, it’s hard to say for sure if her current relationship with Gabriel will last long term. It’s also difficult to say whether or not this baby will actually be born. Being that this is The Walking Dead, pregnancy puts a bit of a target on her back, but season 9 has shown us that childbirth is not always a death sentence, as seen with Maggie and Michonne. With the Whisperer conflict starting up, Rosita may find herself having to put up a fight while also rearing a child. If anyone can handle that, she certainly can.
