Sarah Wayne Callies’ drama Council of Dads gets series order at NBC

Former The Walking Dead star Sarah Wayne Callies is heading to NBC to star in a brand new drama series just picked up by the network.

Sarah Wayne Callies’ new drama has officially been picked up to series at NBC, and it sounds like you may need to have some tissues close by for this one. The series, titled Council of Dads, is based on the best-selling memoir from author Bruce Feiler. The show will follow a father struggling with a recent cancer diagnosis as he tries to ensure the future wellbeing of his family should the worst happen. Knowing that his time left is limit, he calls upon his close friends (aka. the Council of Dads) for support.

NBC’s official synopsis for the upcoming series which reads as follows:

"“When Scott, a loving father of four, has his entire life’s plan thrown into upheaval by a cancer diagnosis, he calls on a few of his closest allies to step in as back-up dads for every stage of his growing family’s life. Scott assembles a trusted group of role models that includes Anthony, his oldest friend; Larry, his AA sponsor; and Oliver, his surgeon and best friend to his wife, Robin. These men agree to devote themselves to supporting and guiding Scott’s amazing family through all the triumphs and challenges life has to offer – just in case he ever can’t be there to do so himself.”"

In addition to Callies, the series will also star Clive Standen (Vikings, Taken), and Tom Everett Scott (That Thing You Do, 13 Reasons Why). Additional casting includes J. August Richards, Blue Chapman, Emjay Anthony, Michele Weaver, Thalia Tran, Steven Silver, and Michael O’Neill. Council of Dads is written by Tony Phelan and Joan Rater. Phelan and Rater will also executive produce along with Jerry Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman, and KristieAnne Reed.

Callies is best-known for playing Lori Grimes on the AMC hit series The Walking Dead and also for her role as Sara Tancredi in Fox’s Prison Break. She also starred in the hit series Colony and made her directorial debut on the show as well. Callies will be returning to her zombie apocalypse roots when she steps in as director on an upcoming season five episode of Fear the Walking Dead.

There is no premiere date set just yet for Council of Dads, but the series is expected to air in the Fall 2019 season.
