The Walking Dead’s Danai Gurira and that wicked Met Gala look
By Renee Hansen
If you are a fan of The Walking Dead or Marvel’s Black Panther, you have to acknowledge that Danai Gurira is one gorgeous human being, inside and out. From her charity work to her amazing premiere looks, she’s got it all.
I love watching all the Met Gala looks, and I think Danai Gurira had one of the best looks for 2019. This year’s theme was “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” I admit I had to google what CAMP FASHION actually means. “Camp” is an over-the-top fashion expression.
Susan Sontag wrote “Notes on Camp” in 1964 and defines this as follows: “Camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.”
In one of Danai’s tweets, she named her look “The Dandy Re-imagined” stating that Oscar Wilde was an inspiration for this look. I think Oscar would approve. One of my favorite quotes of his is: “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”
From her dapper top hat to her slinky heels this look is classic yet campy, and why wouldn’t you show off those beautifully sculpted arms? Her exaggerated train and stick cane add some whimsy to the outfit. The beads in her hair lend a flare that is unexpected in a ‘black tie’ look. Her outfit is by Gabriela Hearst, with jewelry by Fred Leighton, and Jimmy Choo shoes. Bravo to Danai and her team that put this look together.
TWD Fans love her as the kick butt katana-weilding character Michonne but Danai Gurira has also made her mark in the Marvel world as Okoye. In Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame she is a general of the Dora Milaje, which is a group of women who are highly skilled in weaponry.
She shows off a lot of her Michonne type skills in the Marvel world but Okoye has more of a presence & due respect in her world. Both of these characters have unique wardrobe choices as does the actor herself.
