Two connections to The Walking Dead in Tom Payne’s The Prodigal Son
Now that The Walking Dead alum Tom Payne’s The Prodigal Son has been ordered at FOX, the TWD Family have another must-watch show on their calendar.
FOX has picked up Tom Payne’s The Prodigal Son for a full season this fall and that means that The Walking Dead alum will be returning to our television sets very soon. This is welcome news, of course, and there’s an added bonus in that there’s another connection to the TWD universe that comes courtesy of one of Payne’s costars.
The Prodigal Son features two connections to The Walking Dead universe: Tom Payne is one, and his co-star Lou Diamond Phillips is another. Phillips is a TWD superfan who has appeared on Talking Dead to discuss his love of the show and he also directed an episode of Fear the Walking Dead in season 4.
Fans mourned Payne’s character Jesus after he succumbed to the Whisperers in the season 9 mid-season finale. Tom Payne’s departure was bittersweet because there seemed to be so much more story to tell for Jesus and the Hilltop. At the same time, Payne had some great opportunities present themselves with the pilot for The Prodigal Son, which gives him the lead role and hopefully more chances to show off some of those fighting skills he picked up while playing Jesus.
The Prodigal Son is the story of Malcolm Bright (Payne) and his work to profile serial killers with the NYPD. He’s great at his job because his father (Michael Sheen) is one of the most notorious serial killers of all. Malcolm must balance his chaotic family life, including his father’s repeated attempts to bond with him son, while he also does his job. Phillips plays Detective Gil Arroyo, Malcolm’s mentor and boss.
Payne’s Malcolm is a man stuck between two worlds and his connections to his father make it hard to serve the NYPD without arousing suspicion from some of his coworkers.
The Prodigal Son looks to be an exciting new show that will give Tom Payne fans a chance to really see him shine, and Payne and Phillips’ connections to The Walking Dead universe make the show all the more important to support, especially after an upfronts season that saw two shows featuring TWD alum bite the dust with The Kids are Alright and Whiskey Cavalier.
