*** WARNING: Full spoilers for The Walking Dead issue 193 below ***

Issue 193 opens with the sun setting as a walker approaches a farmhouse. Grown-up versions of Carl and Sophia are there, and he quickly eliminates the threat with a sword. Sophia says she wishes he would use a gun so he wouldn’t be so near the undead. Carl says he was worried about drawing the attention of more walkers, but Sophia says they don’t really have to worry about that anymore.

Carl asks where Andrea is and Sophia says she is still asleep because it is a school day. Then, he checks the walker to see if it had bitten anyone, coming up with clean fingers on his glove after swabbing its mouth. He remains curious how the roamer got this deep into their community.

Making a trip into town, Carl finds Hershel. Maggie’s son is putting on a show involving the undead and it doesn’t please Carl. Punching Hershel in the mouth, Carl lets him know he found one of his specimens and finished it off. Hershel is irate that Carl killed it and exclaims that he is going to get Sheriff Kapoor…But Carl says the sheriff knows where to find him.

Back at the farmhouse, Kapoor has arrived to see Carl. Sophia and young Andrea are there to talk about school before the two guys discuss what happened in town. The girls leave to get ready for dinner at the Sutton farm and the guys get down to business.

Carl immediately apologizes to Kapoor and asks him to help get rid of the body. The sheriff says it’s not that easy since it would be burning evidence in a case of destroying property. Carl is shocked that his actions are being seen as unlawful since he was being protective, but Kapoor sticks to the law. He says Carl isn’t under arrest but a hearing will be needed to try to work his punishment down to a fine or something.

At Earl’s, Carl is talking with him about how he should have stayed a smith like Mikey. Carl clarifies that the incident didn’t happen during a run but at his house. Sophia is concerned about the punishment he will receive for killing the walker. Earl is surprised a roamer got that deep in the Safe-Zone

Earl says he was tending to his rose bushes thanks to Rick. Sophia adds that the Earl should consider moving out of the country, so they would worry about him less. However, Earl likes the quiet of seclusion. Later, he gives Sophia and Carl the leftovers and sends them on their way, but not before talking about how they should keep an eye out for Hershel since he was so spoiled by Maggie after Rick’s passing.

That night, Carl and Sophia are looking at the stars with Andrea. He says the dark used to be scary, but now they can appreciate the beauty of the night.

Back at home, Andrea is sleeping. Carl gets to thinking about Rick and how he never got to meet his granddaughter. Plus, seeing Earl reminds him that he never got to see his father grow old. Naturally, he misses his dad.

The next day, Sophia has accompanied Carl into town for his hearing. Inside the courthouse, Hershel is throwing rude glances at Carl as the judge settles the court and sets the stage for the hearing.
