The Walking Dead comic issue 193 recap: The Grimes family legacy
By Adam Carlson
Hershel explains that he makes his money off the traveling walker show and Carl destroyed one of his assets for his performance, adding that there should be consequences for his actions.
When Carl’s turn comes, he says he is nervous because it is his first time at a hearing. He doesn’t deny his actions and takes full responsibility for killing the walker. It comes naturally for him to do that after all these years to eliminate the undead, not see them used as a traveling sideshow…adding that he’d do the same thing again if the situation arose and they should be thankful Rick isn’t there to see something as ludicrous as this.
President Maggie arrives at the courthouse just as the judge was going to her chambers. After a quick discussion at the bench, the judge announces there will be no punishment for Carl for his actions but he must replace the walker he terminated.
Hershel is not happy with this result and neither is Carl. Maggie says it was a favor since a fine for the cost of a walker would be very expensive. Still shocked about the verdict, Carl and Maggie discuss how casual things have gotten now that there aren’t as many walkers around and how they earned this for surviving and expanding.
Carl doesn’t want to be responsible for someone getting bitten. Maggie says that could happen, but things will never be like they were in the past. She adds that he needs to ease up and let go, enjoy the fruits of their labor.
But he isn’t quite ready to do that yet. Carl says his dad didn’t die to have walkers paraded around for kids and everyone has to do their part to keep society running well. He gets on his horse and rides away as Maggie adds that they still expect a replacement walker.
Sophia couldn’t bite her tongue any longer. She gets in Maggie’s face about her brother and tells her that Hershel is spoiled and she should be worried about her son, not Carl. Maggie knows she spoiled him but she wanted a great life for him..but is reminded how everyone talks about him these days. Exactly like people talked about Sebastian Milton.
Catching up to Carl on horseback, Sophia starts making her way back to the school to pick up Andrea. She challenges him to a race, and the two speed off to get her.
That night, Sophia is talking to Carl about how Andrea is worried about her dad. He says he’ll talk to her before leaving to clear his head.
The next day, Hershel is skipping out on a tab at the hotel. As he is leaving, a kid runs up to him and alerts him to his exhibit, which has been absolutely cleaned out of all walkers.
