San Diego Comic-Con is the time of year for big news regarding The Walking Dead franchise. Ahead of the release of the season 10 trailer, the official premiere date has been revealed.

After a refreshed season 9, The Walking Dead is charting new ground in its story without main protagonist Rick Grimes. The most recent season saw the former sheriff’s deputy be picked up in a helicopter to star in a trilogy of upcoming original films set in the larger universe. A six-year time jump created a whole new feel for the show as the characters aged and were soon introduced to a whole new threat: Alpha and the Whisperers.

While season 5 of Fear the Walking Dead is currently airing, fans won’t have to wait too long for the main series to return. In a post on the official The Walking Dead Facebook page, the premiere date for Season 10 was revealed.

Season 10 of The Walking Dead will premiere on Sunday, October 6, 2019

The panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 19 will likely reveal more information about the premiere and the season overall. Showrunner Angela Kang will be appearing along with several executive producers and a handful of the cast.

The Walking Dead is a show shrouded in secrecy, but some information about the upcoming season has been teased by Kang and others. A recent interview with Entertainment Weekly has revealed some tidbits about the characters and plot. For instance, Kang confirmed that a short time jump will take place prior to the start of season 10. Additionally, the first photo from the season has been released exclusively by Entertainment Weekly and it shows Michonne fighting walkers as fire burns around her. As has been reported, Danai Gurira will be exiting the series sometime this season, which means it will be an especially bittersweet chapter in the series.

Fear the Walking Dead’s mid-season finale is set to air on Sunday, July 21 and will return for the second half of the season on Sunday, August 11. Assuming that Fear will run for eight straight weeks in the second half, the season 5 finale will air on Sunday, September 29. This is just one week before the season 10 premiere of The Walking Dead, meaning fans won’t have to suffer through a hiatus between shows. Much like in 2018, the season premiere will coincide with New York Comic-Con, where additional information about the season will likely be released and teased.
