For the most part, Negan spent season 9 locked inside a jail cell in Alexandria. However, that looks like it will change in season 10 of The Walking Dead.

Negan is one of the most polarizing characters in The Walking Dead universe. Some viewers are drawn to his foul mouth and charisma while others still don’t forgive him for what he did to Glenn, Abraham, and others.

With season 10 of the popular AMC zombie survival drama series coming in October, Negan’s role is likely to change. After all, he did realize there was a gas leak in one of the houses and save Judith in a massive snowstorm.

According to TV Insider, Jeffrey Dean Morgan spoke about his role in the upcoming season, saying that his character will be “out picking tomatoes and doing laundry during the day and back in his cell at night.”

That was confirmed in one of the pictures released for season 10 yesterday. Here is that photo:

In the photo, Negan can be seen literally picking tomatoes, just like the statement says. It appears as though he will get some kind of work release from his lockup, but will be supervised while outside his cell.

Brandon, played by Happy Death Day actor Blaine Kern III, is keeping a close eye on him in the photo and has one of the long spears fans previously saw at the Hilltop or at Oceanside.

However, it appears as though even THAT will change, as fans saw an exchange during the season 10 trailer which was released at San Diego Comic-Con.

In that video, Father Gabriel recruits Negan to fight on the team of Aaron, seeing it as a “peanut butter meets jelly” kind of situation since more skilled individuals are needed to battle against whatever is outside the gates: whether it is the Whisperers, walkers, or anything else.

From the sound of things, season 10 of The Walking Dead will be a big one for Negan. He will move from a jail cell to the garden to outside the walls to aid in battle. But the question remains as to whether or not this new Negan is here to stay or if there is still a part of the former leader of the Saviors who hungers to regain the power he once had…and if he can truly be trusted in these roles.
