The Walking Dead issue 193 one of the most ordered comics of July
By Adam Carlson
Comic book retailers made it a point to order a ton of copies of The Walking Dead issue 193 in July, making it one of the most demanded issues of the month.
In July, Robert Kirkman, Skybound, and Image Comics shocked the comic book world by abruptly ending The Walking Dead comic book series with issue 193, leaving readers scurrying to get their hands on a first edition and variants of the book.
This was apparent from the July numbers when it comes to comics sent to retailers. The zombie survival series sold out and went to a second print and the hunt for variant covers was furious by completionists.
It’s no surprise that issue 193 of The Walking Dead was among the most ordered comics for July. According to Comichron, the book was the fourth most ordered comic issue. Here is the top 5 from the month:
- House of X
- Powers of X
- Amazing Spider-Man
- The Walking Dead
- Batman: Last Knight on Earth
It’s hard to compete with the “big dogs” in the comic industry. Marvel and DC dominate the charts on a regular basis, but Image’s undead drama manages to get a healthy chunk of the comic book market.
In fact, the popularity of issue 193 left many fans unable to acquire a physical copy, and many turned to second-hand sources to get their book:
"“July saw a major surprise in the sudden and unannounced end of Walking Dead with #193. The issue was quickly selling in multiples of cover price on eBay.”"
To even compete with so many early number titles from Marvel and DC is tough but to have The Walking Dead go out near the top of the order list of merchants is a nice way for the popular comic book series to come to an end.
