Hershel Gives Glenn The Watch

Season 2, episode 11 “Judge, Jury, Executioner”

Sonya says:

It was really difficult for me to pick one favorite moment from season 2. Season 2 is one of my favorite seasons that the show has ever done. There were so many moments in this season that really set the stage for the future. Ultimately I had to pick Hershel giving Glenn his heirloom watch, and his approval for Glenn to be with Maggie, as my favorite moment.

It was a moment of hope in the dark aftermath of the slaughter of the barn walkers and Hershel coming to terms with what the world really was. Hershel’s approval of his relationship with Maggie meant a lot to Glenn.

Throughout the seasons that followed Glenn never broke his promise to Hershel or acted in any way that Hershel wouldn’t have approved of. He cherished Maggie, and their child, until his brutal murder. And Maggie continued his legacy, and her family’s legacy, keeping the watch with her to pass along to baby Hershel. The watch has become an icon of The Walking Dead as well as a reminder of the hope and the humanity that were so important to Hershel.

In many ways the watch was the spirit of the farm as well as Hershel’s legacy. It’s a symbol of the simple values that have made the group a family and kept them fighting for each other throughout the season that followed. And now that Glenn and Hershel are gone this moment remains a beloved memory of two of the most loved characters that appeared in the show.
