Rick Goes Into Kill Mode

Season 2, episode 8 “Nebraska”

Sara K. says:

My favorite moment from season 2 has to be in the episode “Nebraska”, when Rick kills Dave & Tony in the bar. Dave & Tony kept pestering Rick and Hershel to take them back to their base, but Rick wasn’t having it. It was in this moment that Rick finally realized that not all people in this world should be trusted, and do present danger to the group. Rick makes the shocking decision to kill both Dave and Tony in the bar to prevent them from following them back to the farm.

It was a jaw dropping moment in the series to see “Officer Friendly” abandon his old ways and adapt to the new world that he found himself in. It was this moment that truly excelled Rick’s storyline and developed his character even more to where he became the leader that the group needed moving forward.

Looking back at the episode “Nebraska”, we can see how much that moment changed Rick forever going forward, and how he needed to do that in order to protect those whom he loves. I think it was really important for Rick to go through this transformation because he needed to see that not everyone in this world was good. We see this come up later so many times in the show where Rick is questioning who someone truly is. Killing Tony & Dave really made Rick into Rick Grimes 2.0, and it was completely necessary for Rick’s story. This even foreshadows another big moment in the show where Rick kills Shane later on that season. It’s a huge decision that Rick has to make, but ultimately, I think it came from what Rick had experienced in the bar with Dave & Tony. Not everyone, including Shane could be saved.
