The Walking Dead promoted 9 cast members to series regulars, but the series is well known for putting new series regulars in jeopardy.

After 10 seasons there have been lots of new faces on The Walking Dead in addition to an ever-shrinking core group of original characters. Each season the showrunners promote a number of longstanding cast members to series regulars, and even though that might seem like a good thing, their days could be numbered.

Heading into season 10, The Walking Dead promoted 9 cast members to series regulars: Cailey Fleming, Cassady McClincy, Cooper Andrews, Nadia Hilker, Eleanor Matsuura, Lauren Ridloff and Ryan Hurst.

These are interesting promotions given that the show is heading into the Whisperer’s War in season 10. Can we read into McClincy and Hurst’s promotions, or the fact that Alpha’s Samantha Morton is conspicuously absent from the list?

It’s also interesting to think about who isn’t there than who is. If Ridloff’s Connie is there, why isn’t Angel Theory’s Kelly? What about Dan Fogler?

And knowing that Danai Gurira is leaving, does that mean we’re also losing Cailey Fleming?

Are we about to lose a ton of people in season 10?

It’s a distinct possibility.

Back in season 8, Steven Ogg, Pollyanna McIntosh and Katelyn Nacon were promoted to series regulars. Ogg’s Simon met his end in season 8, McIntosh’s Jadis/Anne flew away with Rick on the helicopter in the first half of season 9 and Nacon’s poor Enid punctuated season 9 with her head on a pike.

In short, no one is ever safe in the world of The Walking Dead, but goodness knows that being promoted to series regular can either be a safety net or a complete red herring ahead of the character’s eventual departure.
