Carl Makes Memories With Judith

Season 8, episode 9 “Honor”

Sonya says:

It’s hard to pick anything out of this episode to be my favorite, because I think that Carl’s death was a huge mistake and totally unnecessary. But seeing Carl, knowing he was dying, take the time to spend time with Judith and make memories with her so that she will remember him after he’s gone is so beautiful. Heartbreaking, but beautiful.

Carl’s maturity is obvious in his decisions. Instead of spending his last day feeling sorry for himself he makes sure that he writes letters to the people he loves so that they will know how much he loves them and spending time with his sister. Carl got a chance that very few people get – the chance to say goodbye. It was emotionally devastating but also gave a sense of closure that he got to make those choices. I would hope that if I knew I was dying I would make the same choices he made to put things in order and spend my remaining time with my family and friends who love me and that I love.

Even though I don’t think Carl’s death was the right move I’m glad that he got an exit that allowed him to say goodbye to Judith and give her some happy memories with him for the future. And in later episodes where it’s revealed that Rick and Michonne hung the piece of the deck where Judith and Carl made handprints in paint on the wall it caused a flood of tears. Carl will never be forgotten.
