What was the most surprising moment from the season 10 premiere?

There was a lot to unpack from this episode and many characters saw things change significantly for them in the small jump in time. In addition, the threat of the Whisperers has everyone paranoid and tensions still exist among the survivors.

With everything going on, there was plenty that could be surprising to see happen. Our panel weighed in on the thing that shocked them the most from the season 10 premiere of The Walking Dead.

Sara L. says

I didn’t have a moment in the first episode for me that was shocking. However, Dante’s introduction did take me by surprise! Most characters coming from the comics do have some changes, Dante included considering the community and job change. However, I have to say the personality was very much there. Dante’s first scene had me laughing with the very open sarcastic/offensive type humor. I’m looking forward to seeing more of him for sure.

Sonya says

The most surprising moment to me was when Alpha came out and saw Carol and the two stared each other down. I hope that’s setting up more moments between the two because I really want to see them face off. I know in the comic it’s Negan who kills Alpha in the comic, but with the changes the show has made I really want it to be Carol that kills Alpha. I feel like that’s the closure she needs to put Henry’s death behind her.

Joe says

To me, the most surprising moment has to be Carol and Alpha’s faceoff at the end of the episode. We knew that the Whisperers were not gone for good, but it was still shocking to see Alpha appear. Have the survivors been being watched all this time without knowing it?

This moment also seems to prepare us for an inevitable showdown between Carol and Alpha. Carol holds a huge grudge against Alpha over the death of Henry and I’m sure Alpha has no love for Carol after her son convinced Lydia to leave the Whisperers for good. While this scene may only have been a quick staredown, it is a precursor for bigger things to come between the two as season 10 continues.

Jeffrey says

I was most surprised to see the episode begin with a shot of a Soviet satellite plummeting toward Earth. It really made me question if I was watching the right show due to the fact that we have never seen anything like that in the entire franchise before. I immediately began theorizing that the satellite was in some way connected to the Russian cosmonaut that Victor Strand spoke to in season 3 of Fear the Walking Dead.

While Angela Kang debunked that theory, seeing outer space and planet Earth was still a unique way to begin the season and remind viewers that there is a whole larger world and universe out there. Having the satellite crash was also a thrilling way to tie together everyone’s stories and give them a different type of threat to fight.

Renee says

The training at Oceanside. It was something Tara wanted to happen so I was surprised and happy that they went ahead with this. I loved that they all came together to learn to defend themselves as a team. You can tell what we saw wasn’t their first go-round. They have been training for a while from the looks of this scene.

Adam says

Like Jeffrey, it was shocking to see the show start with space junk falling from the sky. The show could have made a forest fire start by other means, so that must indicate that the guts of the satellite will have some significance in the future.

We all knew it wouldn’t take long for the Whisperers and the survivors to come into conflict again, but having it be a locking of eyes between Carol and Alpha takes it to a whole ‘nother level.
