The MVP of The Walking Dead 1006 is someone who has a lot of patience – to a point – and if he’s not careful he might see his position in the pack slip.

The Walking Dead 1006 featured some strong performances that generated a number of candidates for MVP, but it was one member of the pack that rose above the noise to come out on top…though his position might slip if he’s not careful.

This week’s MVP: Beta!

This might be the only time that a member of the Whisperers ends up on the positive side of any list, but watching Beta and his interactions with Negan make it clear that the so-called Jolly Green Giant really is watching out for the needs of his pack. Putting Negan through his paces is a way to make sure that the former Savior really wants to be there, but now Beta is starting to realize that Negan’s presence might change everything.

Beta deserves the MVP title because when it comes to being a Whisperer, he’s 100% committed to the job. Unlike Alpha, who has made exceptions because of Lydia, Beta is all-in and he would rather sacrifice a living member of the group than to maim or injure any of his precious Guardians.

In that spirit, Beta put Negan through a battery of challenges to see if he is worthy. He had to dig a giant hole, he had to skin a walker, he had to haul walkers and he had to kill a pig. Beta didn’t deem Negan’s efforts as being worthy so Negan didn’t get to eat, save for the bite of meat another Whisperer shared with him. And when he continued to mouth off, Beta killed the offending Whisperer to trigger the walkers.

Unfortunately for Beta, Negan didn’t die in that walker attack. And now it looks like Alpha might appreciate Negan’s larger than life approach.

We also have to give a big round of applause to Ryan Hurst for his inspired performance in The Walking Dead 1006. He always does a great job, but we can only imagine what the outtakes must look like trying to film those scenes with Jeffrey Dean Morgan. (And we want to see them!)

Though his control in Alpha’s pack might be slipping away, Beta deserves an A for keeping up with Negan in “Bonds” and that’s what makes him this week’s MVP.

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9pm on AMC.
