Happy birthday to The Walking Dead alum David Morrissey
Happy birthday to the man who brought the Governor to life on The Walking Dead
June 21 is David Morrissey’s birthday and while fans are glad the Governor is gone from the world of The Walking Dead, everyone misses the man who brought him to life. The prolific British actor gave life to the Governor until the Governor’s death in season 4, though he came back in a few flashbacks after he died.
Unlike Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan, Morrissey’s Governor was much more subdued. The man who walked the friendly streets of Woodbury was also a homicidal maniac with his dead daughter kept in an attic along with massive aquariums full of decapitated heads.
You know, because that’s a totally normal thing to do.
Morrissey was really able to flex his acting muscles when he was able to go from the outwardly kindhearted Governor who cared about his people to the cruel, ruthless madman who stopped at nothing to kill anyone who defied him. Naturally, Rick Grimes pushed all of the buttons and became the Governor’s biggest target.
The Governor was responsible for killing beloved Hershel, and fittingly it was Michonne who dealt the Governor his death blow.
After his run on The Walking Dead, Morrissey appeared on a number of projects including Extant, The Missing and Britannia. He also made an appearance on the Amazon Prime hit Good Omens with David Tennant and Michael Sheen.
Since the Governor is very dead, there’s no chance he will appear in future episodes of the show, but he could certainly pop up in a flashback in Rick Grimes’ story. The Governor was defeated, but he left death and devastation in his wake and it’s something that always haunted Rick for years to come.
Happy birthday David Morrissey, and thanks for bringing the suave psychopath to life on The Walking Dead!
