CONGRATULATIONS to Steven Yeun for making history at the Oscars!!
By Renee Hansen
I have tears in my eyes as I type this article. Steven Yeun is the first-ever Asian-American to be nominated for an Oscar in the Lead Actor Category!
Just one month ago, we were celebrating his SAG award nomination for his performance in Minari. Now the film and individual actors have been nominated for at least 40 categories across multiple acting awards platforms.
Lee Isaac Chung wrote and directed the semi-autobiographical film. Minari has been renowned for being a real look at an immigrant family seeking out their dream of being farmers in rural America.
Minari premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it received high praise.
When Minari premiered, the movie and Yeun both received rave reviews. Since then, there has been nothing but praise for this film.
Yeun plays Jacob Yi, patriarch of the family, and is joined by Yeri Han, who plays his wife Monica, and Alan S. Kim, who plays his son David. Noel Kate Cho plays his daughter Anne, Yuh-Jung Youn is his grandmother Soonja who was brought from the old country to help with childcare and lend a wise voice to the family. Will Patton portrays the Yi family’s deeply religious neighbor.
The film follows the Yi family, who moved from Korea to the United States in the 1980s. They settled in California, where their children were born, and Jacob and Monica worked as chicken sexers, where they separated baby chicks by their gender.
Jacob has a dream of becoming an American farmer. They set out to Arkansas to do just that. Monica never seems completely on board but works hard to make things better for their family.
Minari is available in some theaters and available to rent through YouTube, Google Play, DirectTV, VUDU and Amazon Prime.
Our heartfelt congratulations go out to Steven Yeun and everyone involved in Minari.
