If flesh-eating zombies do become a problem for society, then one place many would not expect to be the fifth-best site to find sanctuary if people were to find themselves in a reality resembling what is seen in Fear the Walking Dead. A study by Realtor.com found that Kalamazoo, MI ranked well for outlasting zombies, meeting certain criteria, which included several factors like the fitness of its populace and its ability to endure through the struggle.

They also found that thanks to the area being a hot spot for tornadoes, many houses had properties with bunkers or safe rooms. This, combined with the fact that the area is rich with places to hunt because the activity is so popular in these parts, means there will be plenty of food for the many capable survivors fighting off the undead within the city limits.

The Michigan city has an abundant supply of firearms, weapon stores, and firing ranges, indicating they will not be in need of firepower when the undead bang at their door. Also adding to Kalamazoo’s defense capabilities is the military presence from Fort Cluster, which would be stacked with guns, ammo, vehicles, explosives, and resources needed to stay alive.

As far as being able to treat the wounded and possibly find a cure for the zombie virus, Kalamazoo is a major international pharmaceutical and life sciences center. This would lead one to believe that there would be a substantial number of medical and health professionals in the area as well.
