There have been a huge number of wonderful characters grace The Walking Dead universe. However, only one could be named the most popular of all time, and the choice creator Robert Kirkman made might be a little surprising.

Of course, everyone loves Rick Grimes. The comics and flagship television series protagonist has a massive following, as do great characters like Negan, Carol, Daryl, Morgan, John Dorie, Alicia Clark, and numerous others from the franchise’s past.

However, none of those listed above are considered the most popular of all time by Robert Kirkman.

Who is the most popular character in The Walking Dead history?

In the Cutting Room Floor section of The Walking Dead Deluxe issue #19, Robert Kirkman talked about how his plans changed regarding the book’s layout. He discussed how it didn’t leave a lot of room for introducing Michonne.

Even with those limitations, Michonne has gone on to be a driving force in the shows and the comics, even getting her own stand-alone game from Telltale Games while some others merely had cameos.

Here is what Kirkman had to say about why he believes Michonne is the most popular character in the history of the franchise:

"“I feel like she edges out Daryl Dixon because he’s only in the TV show, but that’s just me.”"

It’s hard to argue that logic. If talking about only the show, Daryl should win that competition. However, when adding in the comics, games, and other parts of the TWD Universe, choosing Michonne makes quite a bit of sense.

Interestingly, Michonne was never designed to enter TWD’s world at all. In fact, she was designed to be a character in a sci-fi/apocalyptic comic called Dead Planet that didn’t see the light of day at Image Comics. Thank goodness that series never got the green light because Michonne is such a beloved part of Kirkman’s zombie world with The Walking Dead.

Fans are still welcome to choose their own favorites and love whatever characters they want. Still, it’s clear that Michonne is among the best to enter The Walking Dead universe, and we should all look forward to hopefully seeing her again one day.
