Jon Bernthal talks about The Many Saints of Newark and more
By Renee Hansen
Jon Bernthal’s career has taken off, and this man is in everything. Fans of The Walking Dead only enjoyed his portrayal of the hot-headed Shane Walsh for two seasons before he was killed off. He gave such life to that character, and I think we deserve a “What if…Shane didn’t get killed” episode. This week Bernthal appearance on Late Night with Seth Myers, and he shared all sorts of info on what he is currently up to.
He is in the series The Premise, which airs on FX on Hulu, and it premieres its first two episodes this week. (9/16) This is a B.J. Novak-created anthology series. Bernthal will appear in episode 2 titled “Moment of Silence.” He stars with Boyd Holbrooke, Beau Bridges and Amy Landecker.
Another new film is Small Engine Repair in which he stars and produces that is currently in theaters. Bernthal starred in the play that this film was based on about ten years ago. He is excited for his fans to see this film as it will make you laugh and cry, and it may just offend you. But most of all, it will make you think.
The film is set in New Hamshire, where Myers is from, so they discussed the area, and Bernthal shared how he attended a summer camp there when he was younger. Coincidentally, he recently dropped his young sons at that same summer camp, and it was hard to leave them there. He shared how different his two sons’ personalities are; one was tearing up as he had to leave his dad, the other slapped him on his ass and said, see ya, fat man.
Jon Bernthal in The Many Saints of Newark
He aspired to be an extra on the set of the Sopranos when he started as an actor. Now to be able to be on The Many Saints of Newark is a dream come true. He feels that Michael Gandolfini has done a remarkable job, and he believes in him, and he feels people will enjoy what he brings to this new story.
He does caution Soprano fans to understand; this isn’t that series, that is a proper prequel set in the past. Things will be reminiscent of the characters fans are familiar with.
He couldn’t comment on the film’s entirety as he hasn’t viewed the whole thing yet. The film will be released in theaters and HBO Max on October 1.
Best of luck to Jon Bernthal in all his new projects and his upcoming We Own This City, American Gigolo, Snow Ponies and the Accountant Sequel.
