In the final season of The Walking Dead, the Commonwealth has finally been introduced, and some will fit into this community better than others. One character who will fit in because of their life before the outbreak is Yumiko. In that life, she was an attorney who could speak her mind and own a room which she has already demonstrated.

Eleanor Matsuura plays Yumiko in the series, and until this season, we haven’t seen a lot of who she is. We’ve seen the survivor who isn’t afraid to fight, who is helpful in scavenging and all the things necessary to survive in an apocalypse. But, before the outbreak, like everyone else, she led a very different life.

The introduction of the Commonwealth is going to allow Yumiko the opportunity to shine. Sure, she has taken the comic storyline of Michonne, but she will take it and make it her own.

Yumiko and the Commonwealth on The Walking Dead

From what we have seen, so far, of the Commonwealth, we know they are a progressive community, they are 50,000 people strong, have a military-type presence, and are very selective with the people they allow inside their walls.

This is the first time we have gotten to see Yumiko in her element. She took on a different posture and attitude when dealing with the auditors and everyone else she has come into contact with. This community will be a good fit for her because she can use her skills and training as a lawyer to their full potential.

The Commonwealth in the comics is set up with particular class distinctions, and it appears the series will follow. We witnessed this in the most recent episode with the introduction of Sebastian Milton, son of Governor Milton. He expected everyone to know who he is and to be there to protect him. This class system is something that most of the Alexandrians won’t be too keen about.

For Yumiko, these social classes will give her a level playing field when fighting for Eugene and the charges he has accumulated in a short amount of time. And will hopefully help her brother Tomi since the Commonwealth soldiers recently detained him.
