Do you remember that The Walking Dead’s Thora Birch is in Hocus Pocus?
By Renee Hansen
Many years before Thora Birch donned someone else’s face as a Whisperer on The Walking Dead, she starred in the 1993 film Hocus Pocus. Birch was just 11 years old when she played the role of the Halloween-loving Dani Dennison in the movie.
Hocus Pocus is a cult classic Halloween film that stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson Sisters, Winifred, Sarah and Mary, respectively. The three witches were alive in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1693 and were killed for casting a spell on and killing a young girl. Before they died, Winifred cast a spell that would resurrect the sisters during a full moon on All Hallows Eve if a virgin lights the black candle.
Over three centuries later, in 1993, Max Dennison moves from California to Salem and accidentally resurrects the sisters. Max, his friend, and his sister Dani (Birch) must figure out how to stop the witches from becoming immortal.
The film didn’t have critical or commercial success upon its release but, over the years, has become a cult classic Halloween staple. A sequel is in the works by Disney+ with a scheduled release sometime in 2022.
Thora Birch to star in Netflix’s Wednesday
A month ago, more casting was announced for Tim Burton’s Wednesday series for Netflix. Thora Birch will play Tamra Novak, a normie on staff at Nevermore Academy who is the dorm mother for Wednesday Addams.
This series is a coming-of-age story about the Addams Family’s daughter. She attended school at Nevermore Academy, just as her parents did.
Birch will also star in a new film, 13 Minutes, released only in theaters on October 29. This film will be available on VOD on November 19, with a DVD release on December 7.
This film follows four families as a tornado hits their heartland town and what they experience in a day’s time due to the disaster. Their stories intertwine as they all prepare to survive a tornado unlike any they have seen before.
Birch stars with Trace Adkins, Amy Smart, Peter Facinelli, Anne Heche, Paz Vega, Will Peltz, Sofia Vassilieva and Shalyee Mansfield.
Be sure to watch Thora Birch in the classic Hocus Pocus as well as her new film 13 Minutes and the Netflix series Wednesday, which is still in production.
