By Renee Hansen
Fans of The Walking Dead have been worried about what they are going to do when the flagship series ends in 2022. Great news! AMC announced this week that Tales of the Walking Dead anthology is coming to the network in the summer of 2022.
Tales of the Walking Dead was announced over a year ago, and more recently, it was announced that Channing Powell would serve as the showrunner. Powell started on The Walking Dead in season four and Fear the Walking Dead in season six. She has written or co-written about 20 episodes for the franchise and served as a producer for both series. She will work closely with chief content officer Scott M. Gimple.
The series first season will consist of six episodes that are anthology-based. This series could feature any characters within The Walking Dead universe. Production will begin after the start of the new year.
What is Tales of the Walking Dead about?
With the announcement that The Walking Dead would end with its eleventh season, the announcement of two spin-off series was also made. There will be a Daryl and Carol spin-off that will see the return of Angela Kang as showrunner. And the second spin-off, Tales of the Walking Dead.
But, what is Tales of the Walking Dead? This will be set up as an anthology, stand-alone episodes that focus on one story per episode with a smaller number of characters. This opens up a world of possibilities within the fandom. Any character could show up in this series, dead or alive, old or brand new. The limits are up to the creators.
This is exciting news, and fans have already started talking about who they want to see in this series. We could see more in-depth stories about specific periods, future stories about what happens to people after The Walking Dead ends, or characters we’ve never seen again; we could find out about what happened to them.
