The Walking Dead: Alexandria’s walls will come down
By Renee Hansen
Senoia, Georgia, is known in fandom as the home of The Walking Dead. The main street served as the Governor’s town of Woodbury, and many other locations within the city have also been used. The most famous and most obvious is the community of Alexandria, which is within view of the town’s main street.
Fans journey to the little town to experience The Walking Dead, meet up with other fans, tour the filming locations, visit the Woodbury Store and Walking Dead museum. Visitors can also walk fairly close to Alexandria, with its towering windmill and corrugated metal walls, it’s hard to miss.
Many fans also flock to Senoia to visit Nic & Normans, a restaurant owned by actor Norman Reedus and director and SFX guru Greg Nicotero. The restaurant is located on the main street and has recently opened up an outdoor seating area.
The Walking Dead Alexandria filming site
The Newnan Times-Herald has reported that after seven years, the walls of Alexandria will be coming down. The studio erected the walls of Alexandria in September 2014 and has served as a main filming site for the series.
Stalwart Films location manager Michael Riley appealed to the City Council to extend the street closure for Morgan Street until June 2022. This will allow filming to wrap for the series, as only three episodes are remaining and should be completed by March, giving them time to clean up the area. He also requested a month-by-month extension if COVID or some other unforeseen slows down production.
The location known as the Gin Property will be put entirely to rights by the production company; AMC will then restore all the 10 homes on the property used for the series and list them for sale later this year.
The original plan for the Gin Property was multiple brownstones, live-work townhomes, single-family homes, and factory loft-style condos. If you want to live in the area, at least one of the brownstones is currently for sale for $1.1 million.
It is sad to see the series end, and it will be strange to visit Senoia and not see the windmill towering above.
The Walking Dead returns to AMC on February 20.
