Who plays Mercer on The Walking Dead?
By Renee Hansen
Fans of The Walking Dead comics enjoy seeing the on-screen versions of the comic characters. Especially ones who have iconic stories and iconic looks from the comics. One of the newer characters in the series is named Mercer, and his look was one of the ones where it looked like he walked off a comic book page.
In season 11, viewers were introduced to Mercer, the General of the Commonwealth army. Fans of the series balked at the uniforms of the Commonwealth soldiers, likening them to Stormtroopers of Star Wars fame. Mercer took this uniform one step further by introducing his red ‘stormtrooper’ suit, which the actor nicknamed “Mr. Sherbet.”
Mercer attended the US Military Academy at West Point and served in the Marines. He was first introduced in “Acheron: Part 1” when he attended interviews of Ezekiel, Yumiko, Eugene, and Princess. He can keep his cool in tense situations, which isn’t something we always see in The Walking Dead universes.
Who plays Mercer in The Walking Dead?
Michael James Shaw is the actor who portrays Mercer in The Walking Dead series. He is an imposing figure in the Commonwealth but is shown to be reasonable, especially in dealing with the new trainees of the Commonwealth military.
If his story follows his comic book story, Mercer has a considerable role yet to play in the series. So far, viewers have seen two sides of him, the strong force in the military position, but there is another side to him, as was seen in the episode “New Haunts,” where he was uncomfortable at the masquerade ball. Not only was he uncomfortable in his suit, but he went against the grain of the Commonwealth and brought Princess into the event with him.
Shaw is known for his TV roles in Limitless, Bull, Blue Bloods, Blood & Treasure and The Enemy Within. His film roles include Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
