The final season of The Walking Dead series began airing in August 2021 with a mega-sized 24-episode season to look forward to. At that time it seemed like the series still had a long way to go but somehow we find ourselves preparing for the third and final part of this season. Currently, on hiatus, the series only has eight episodes remaining to wrap up a story fans have followed for 12 years. The question on every fan’s mind is, when will the series return?

AMC has yet to make an official announcement other than we will see the final episodes in the fall of 2022. Traditionally October is Walking Dead month as that is when most of the seasons premiered including season one which began on Halloween night 2010.

San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) will host its annual event on July 21-24. The Walking Dead will be making an appearance at the event, which will be the final for the flagship series. In previous years AMC would use this event to release the official trailer for the upcoming season, and it is expected that this is when the season 11 part 3 trailer will be revealed. It is hopeful that the premiere date will also be announced during this event.

Our best guess is the series will pick back up on the first weekend of October. In April AMC announced an “epic live finale fan event” that would be hosted in Los Angeles for the finale episode. Nothing new has been revealed for this event but the initial press release from AMC stated it would be held in November.

There are many loose ends that need to be addressed before the conclusion of the series. Greg Nicotero, director and SFX master of The Walking Dead world, has stated that fans will be pleased with the final episode, which he had the honor of directing. Nicotero has directed some of the best episodes of the series.

It is a sobering thought to know that before 2022 is over, The Walking Dead series will have aired its final episode. The fandom will continue with Tales of the Walking Dead premiering on August 14, Fear the Walking Dead’s eighth season, Isle of the Dead, and the Daryl spinoff series. Many still hold out hope that the trilogy of movies promised so many years ago will someday be produced.
