As we gear up for The Walking Dead’s final San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) appearance, it is fun to look back to previous years. This year’s event will be held July 21-24 at  San Diego Convention Center. This is the first in-person event since 2019. During the 2012 event, Skybound and The Walking Dead brought something extra special to the event in the form of an interactive obstacle course.

To commemorate the 100th issue of The Walking Dead comic, creator Robert Kirkman and Skybound transformed Petco Park into The Walking Dead Escape: San Diego. Participants could become a survivor and run through a walker-infested zone, become one of the undead or watch from the sidelines during the Escape Party.

Below is the promotional video for the course.

The Walking Dead – SDCC 2012

This year’s panel included Andrew Lincoln, Sarah Wayne Callies, Norman Reedus, Laurie Holden, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, and introduced Danai Guriria as Michonne and David Morrissey as the Governor. Also in attendance were showrunner Glen Mazzara, EPs Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd and SFX supervisor and co-EP Greg Nicotero. The panel was moderated by Talking Dead host Chris Hardwick. This year was all about promoting season 3 of the series that would premiere on October 14, 2012.

The big news for this season was the prison, Woodbury and Michonne and her Katana. Nicotero shared that he and his team worked hard to create more decomposed walkers for this season.

Questions from fans included how the Brits could pull off the Southern American accents (dialect coaches). Kirkman was asked if Daryl would be included in the comics, to which he replied it wasn’t in his immediate plans. When asked who was most like their characters, Holden felt close to Andrea, Cohan admired Maggie’s weapons skills and Gurira hoped she’d be like Michonne in a ZA.
