Three years ago at San Diego Comic Con , fans of The Walking Dead were given a treat when a teaser was revealed announcing Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) would return, this time on the big screen. Since that time, the fandom has significantly altered as the main series announced in 2020 that it would be ending with its eleventh season.

During the SDCC 2021 virtual events, Greg Nicotero and Gale Anne Hurd stated that things for the movies were progressing. The initial announcement for the movies and a statement by Lincoln confirmed that there would be a trilogy of Walking Dead films in the future. The series’ ending has undoubtedly affected the direction those movies will take; hopefully, that is the only reason we haven’t seen them yet.

Comic Con 2022 will again hold an in-person event this year on July 21-24, something that hasn’t happened since the 2019 event. This is bound to bring a massive crowd as many fans are ready for the excitement that only an in-person event can bring.

***JULY 2022 UPDATE: The Walking Dead spinoff – Rick Grimes and Michonne return in 2023

The Walking Dead universe – Comic Con 2022

This year’s event should be quite informative for The Walking Dead universe fans. News is expected for the final eight episodes of The Walking Dead, and Tales of the Walking Dead will premiere in August, so there is bound to be an official trailer. Isle of the Dead will begin filming soon, so perhaps there will be more cast announcements for this Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) spinoff. Norman Reedus, who plays Daryl Dixon, will go on to star in a spinoff set and be filmed in Europe, there could be some news of this series as well.  Fear the Walking Dead has moved filming to Savannah and will have begun filming by the time SDCC rolls around, so there will be news for that series eighth season too.

But, what about the movies? Fans are anticipating news about the promised movies. Most viewers long to see Rick’s return, especially in the final season of the series, which is highly unlikely. But, these movies need to be developed as Rick is the original leader and a vital part of the story. His children, family and friends deserve to know his fate and be reunited with him.

Below is the teaser for The Walking Dead movies from SDCC 2019.
