What is the new Walking Dead show announced at Comic Con?

This year Comic Con held its first in-person event since 2019. For The Walking Dead universe, it was an event of epic proportions! The Walking Dead series held an emotionally charged final panel that featured several key cast members. One of the numerous spinoff series, Tales of the Walking Dead, held its first-ever panel with return cast member Samantha Morton. And TWDU received a major surprise from AMC in the form of a brand new series that no one expected.

In season 9 of The Walking Dead, survivor and leader Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), in a brave move, blew up a bridge to save his family. He was assumed dead, but viewers were privy to the fact that Jadis/Anne (Pollyanna McIntosh) saved him and transported him away in a CRM (Civic Republic Military) helicopter. This storyline was to accommodate Lincoln’s desire to leave the series to spend time with his family in the UK.

In season 10, his wife, Michonne, played by Danai Gurira, discovered that he had survived the blast, and she went in search of her love. Again this storyline was written as Gurira was ready to pursue many other projects, which she has done.

In a surprise announcement at Comic Con 2022, Lincoln and Gurira entered the stage at Hall H to announce that Rick and Micho9nne would be coming back to TWDU in a spinoff of their own.

The Walking Dead – Rick and Michonne spinoff

Fans of the series have longed for the return of Rick, and if he is there, he needs his best friend and love at his side. Chatter on social media has fans asking all sorts of questions about what this series will entail. And, I am going to say that this series isn’t going to be a revamp of The Walking Dead. Or, if it is, AMC is wasting its time.

The series will be showrun by COO Scott Gimple, with Lincoln and Gurira as executive producers. It is encouraging to learn that the actors have skin in the game, as I feel both of them will be an added element to this series to make it something remarkable. The press release for the series states “will begin with six episodes in 2023,” giving us hope that this will not be a limited series.

But, what will this series look like? Alexandria and Hilltop are no more. AMC has dismantled both communities, so there is no celebratory homecoming. When Lincoln first announced his departure from the series, a trilogy of movies was announced. Since then, AMC has undergone many leadership changes, and now those people feel this story will be handled via the network instead of at the theater. Will the network use what was being developed for the movies for this series? Are fans hoping to see a huge TWD reunion going to be sorely disappointed if they find this series truly is a Richonne-centric series?

Only time will tell as more casting announcements are made for the Rick and Michonne series. It is an exciting time in the fandom, and this announcement has lessened the blow of the ending of the flagship series.
