Comic Con 2022 not only announced the return of Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) to the universe but also gave viewers the release date, October 2, and trailer for season 11, part 3 of The Walking Dead. The trailer begins with a heartfelt homage to our favorite series, and then the action starts. The series’ last eight episodes will be worth the watch.

One comment made by Aaron (Ross Marquand) has fans excited. He says, “I’ve heard stories of walkers that can climb walls and open doors. I was never sure if they were just stories.” This has fans sure that the variant walkers teased during a post-credit clip after The Walking Dead: World Beyond spinoff’s final episode will be featured in the last eight episodes.

If you aren’t familiar, the post-credit scene featured a familiar face from season 1, Dr. Jenner (Noah Emmerich), in recorded footage being viewed by someone in what appears to be France. This person is eventually shot, killed, and reanimates into what appears to be a stronger walker variant with some memory retention.

Does Aaron’s comment mean we will see variant walkers introduced in the last eight episodes of the series? It is doubtful. To cram in a storyline of this magnitude at the very end would be a terrible mistake.

Perhaps this is just a throwback to the more intelligent walkers in season 1 when showrunner Frank Darabont had a different idea of what the undead should be. We saw the Teddy Bear walker pick up her stuffy, Morgan’s wife turned the doorknob, and one walker picked up a rock trying to bash in the window in Atlanta. When Glen Mazzara took over as showrunner, he reverted to the brainless walkers of Robert Kirkman’s comic.

UNLESS introducing this type of undead would lead to one of the spinoff series. Are these variant walkers supposed to be contained on the island of Manhattan? This would lead Maggie and Negan on a mission there? Or Daryl to Europe where the post-credit scene took place?

Only time will tell what the purpose of this is. It seems to be vital to have it included in the trailer.

The Walking Dead returns to AMC on October 2 at 9 p.m. ET. AMC+ will air the first two episodes of part 3 on this same date.
