If Samantha Morton didn’t scare you enough as the skin mask-wearing leader of the Whisperers on The Walking Dead, just wait. Now she has taken on the role of Catherine de Medici, one of the most influential women in history, who is terrifying in Starz’s official trailer for Morton’s latest role in The Serpent Queen.

Based on the novel Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France by Leonie Frieda, the series is written and produced by Justin Hythe (Red Sparrow). The Serpent Queen will premiere on Starz on September 11.

Morton plays the elder queen, with Liv Hill portraying the younger, as viewers learn of Cathrine’s earlier years via flashbacks. Catherine de Medici was an orphaned girl who married into 16th century French court only to discover her new husband had a lover much older than she. She then decided to take matters into her own hands and rule with cruelty and brutality.

Additional cast includes  Charles Dance,  Amrita Acharia, Enzo Cilenti, Barry Atsma, Nicholas Burns, Danny Kirrane,  Sennia Nanua, Beth Goddard, Antonia Clarke, Colm Meaney, Adam Garcia,  Raza Jaffrey, Ray Panthaki, Kiruna Stamell and Alex Heath.

Morton will reprise her role in TWDU on the new spinoff series Tales of the Walking Dead. This will be a background story of Alpha, or Dee, as she used to be called. At Comic Con 2022, Morton remarked that the background story of Alpha and Lydia that viewers saw was Lydia’s remembrance of what took place, but that doesn’t mean that is how things actually happen. This leads us to believe there is new information that will be revealed about Alpha/Dee’s past.

Tales of the Walking Dead premieres on AMC and AMC+ on August 14 and is an anthology-based series with each episode telling a new story. Alpha’s story will be told in the season finale episode that will air on AMC on September 18.
