Walking Dead: Terry Crews future, will we see Joe again?
By Renee Hansen
Tales of the Walking Dead made its debut on AMC Sunday, August 14. This series is the third spinoff in The Walking Dead universe set in the same world but featuring stand-alone stories introducing new characters in different parts of the United States. The main series will end in November 2022 after a 12-year run, but the fandom is far from over as there are several other spinoffs in the works, and hopefully, Tales of TWD will be renewed for future seasons.
The first episode was a great road trip story pairing up two characters, Joe (Terry Crews) and Evie (Olivia Munn), who couldn’t be more different. Joe is an introverted, loner prepper who had been ready for any end-of-the-world scenario and spent over a year of the outbreak alone with his dog. Evie is a free spirit, jovial extrovert who, despite the state of the world, still finds good in every situation.
Many fans hoped to see more connections to the flagship series in these stories, but they are standalone stories that look into other people and situations in the same world. This will expand the universe; who knows, future seasons could see more ties to the main series.
So far, we know episode 4 will have direct ties as it features Samantha Morton reprising her role as Alpha during a time when she was known as Dee.
The Walking Dead universe – Terry Crews
Deadline interviewed showrunner Channing Powell and Crews and discussed the future of Tales of the Walking Dead. Although future seasons of the series has yet to be greenlit, Powell and the creators have plenty of stories to continue the series. They have even written a full-on musical episode that needs to be released.
Spoiler for Evie/Joe episode below
Crews character Joe survives his episode, and the final scene sees Evie, Joe, and their little lamb Skipper traveling away down a road to parts unknown. For all we know, they could be headed back to Joe’s well-stocked bunker. But Crews makes a great point in the Deadline interview.
"We both know that Joe and Evie are headed into a much darker time. It’s only 402 days after the apocalypse, you know?"
He made this comment in reference to Joe reappearing in the franchise in another episode of Tales of TWD or one of the other spinoff series. Obviously, Joe’s story isn’t over, and it would be very cool to see him 10+ years into the future and what has happened to him.
He used Morgan Jones’ (Lennie James) story as an example of how TWDU works. Morgan was in the pilot and wasn’t seen again for quite some time. Then when he returned yet again, he took on a much more significant role and then crossed over to Fear the Walking Dead.
Crews said, “I love that everything’s not linear.” He talked about seeing Joe at different times in the ZA. Perhaps he was with Tyreese (Chad Coleman) and Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) or T-Dog (Irone Singleton).
Tales of the Walking Dead has the potential to be something massive within TWDU. The sky is the limit in this series. As Crews said, it isn’t linear. Powell did say in an interview with Collider that one episode in season 1 spans at least 30 years into the future. That is exciting!
