One year ago, on August 22, 2021, the last season premiere episode of The Walking Dead aired on AMC. The episode was titled “Acheron: Part 1” and was written by Angela Kang & Jim Barnes and directed by Kevin Dowling. Fans were anxious to see what the final episodes would bring while also dreading the fact it was the beginning of the end of the long-running series. It was a great action-packed episode to kick off the final season and also introduced the Commonwealth community.

With Alexandria in dire straights, the most crucial task was locating food for the residents. A group led by Daryl (Norman Reedus) raided Fort Connors and found some MREs but not nearly enough to sustain them. This would then lead Maggie to tell them about Meridian, the last place she lived, and the food stores there. The only problem was that the Reapers had taken control of the community.

This would lead a group to navigate the streets of Washington DC, where a storm forces them underground into the abandoned subway tunnels. Maggie’s (Lauren Cohan) hatred of Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) will play a massive role in the early episodes of this season.

This episode also sees Eugene (Josh McDermitt), Ezekiel (Khary Payton), Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura), and Princess (Paola Lázaro), who have been captured by the Commonwealth, be interrogated by the auditors, Clark (Carrie Genzel) and Evans (Matthew Cornwell). This episode also introduces viewers to Mercer (Michael James Shaw), the General of the Commonwealth Army.

The episode ends on a literal cliffhanger as Maggie hands on the edge of a subway car begging for Negan’s help as he walks away.
