The Walking Dead will return to AMC on October 2 when it airs the first episode of the final eight for the series. There are several characters whose fates are secured by the spinoff announcements, but there are still many who could die in the battle against the Commonwealth and the horde descending on that community. But, after watching the third episode of Tales of the Walking Dead, let’s hope Lydia (Cassady McClincy) gets a happy ending.

In the recent episode of Tales of TWD titled “Dee,” viewers see more details of the story of Alpha (Samantha Morton). This, of course, also sheds more light on poor little Lydia, who has suffered so much. Until this point, any flashbacks revealed about Alpha and Lydia prior to their storyline in the series were from Lydia’s POV. This means everything was viewed from the lens of a young child, and often the details are hazy to a child or distorted by an adult glossing over the facts. Parents will do this for one of two reasons, protection from the truth or to hide some horrible realities from the child.

In the case of Alpha and Lydia, it is a little of both. In her own twisted way, Alpha really did love her child. In the Tales of TWD story, we see the lengths Alpha would go to save Lydia. She almost committed a murder-suicide to save them from the apocalyptic world filled with beings who want to kill them, both alive and undead.

The Walking Dead – Lydia

In the flashbacks from Lydia’s POV, she always thought her mother was the savior and her father the abuser. She also believed her mother’s physical abuse was to make her strong. She realized the truth when she spent time at Hilltop, away from her mother.

The Tales of the TWD episode reveals that since then, Lydia was likely looking for a place like Brooke (Lauren Glazier) promised her. When she was brought into the Hilltop community, she found what she was looking for and decided to change who her mother made her into. And she proved that she genuinely changed when she was willing to return to her mother to save Luke (Dan Fogler) and Alden (Callan McAuliffe).

The new information learned about Lydia’s treatment from her mother cements the fact she deserves happiness. She has a real family, who loves her unconditionally, something she never knew existed except perhaps for a very short time with Brooke. Hopefully, she makes it to the end and has a happily ever after. And, it appears she has become somewhat attached to Elijah (Okea  Eme-Akwari), so hopefully, he also survives, saving her that heartache.
