Melissa McBride has portrayed Carol Peletier in The Walking Dead series since season 1, episode 2, “Tell it to the Frogs.” She began her journey as an abused wife of Ed (Adam Marinovich) and mother to Sophia (Madison Lintz), and 12 years later, she has transformed into a zombie apocalypse powerhouse.

By the end of The Walking Dead, McBride still believed that Carol would still have “some more story.” In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, McBride stated, “I feel like Carol has more story to tell,” she responded before pausing. “I’ll leave it at that.”

McBride was initially scheduled to star in a spinoff series with Norman Reedus, who plays Daryl Dixon. The two remaining characters from season one are still featured in the final season. But when production moved to France, this wasn’t possible for McBride, and she bowed out, citing that after 12 years of filming, she needed a break.

Reedus has supported her decision and reassured fans that “their journey isn’t over.”

The Walking Dead series uses the comic book story as source material, and Carol is a character featured in both. But, her comic story ends in tragedy early in the story. Luckily for viewers, her on-screen counterpart has developed into quite the warrior and someone who isn’t afraid to make the hard decisions.

AMC surprised fans with the official announcement that McBride would join Redus in the second season of The Walking Dead: Dary Dixon, which has added the sub-heading The Book of Carol for the upcoming season.

Carol was featured in the final episode of season 1 of Daryl Dixon, where she searched for her long-lost bestie Daryl. Before he was unceremoniously thrown onto a ship bound for France, he contacted Carol at the Commonwealth, telling her he was in Maine and promised to return to the CW within a week. When this didn’t happen, it was no surprise to anyone that she went in search of him.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon –  The book of Carol will premiere in 2024.
