Tales of the Walking Dead is an excellent addition to The Walking Dead universe. This series tells standalone stories of new characters and is a breath of fresh air to the fandom. One remarkable fact about this spinoff is that you can watch these episodes in any order, and you can watch them without ever having watched one episode of The Walking Dead or Fear the Walking Dead.

The fourth episode of Tales of the Walking Dead was titled “Amy/Dr. Everett” and was a great look at how things could be in the future of the apocalypse. A naturalist named Dr. Everett, portrayed by Anthony Edwards, was cut off from the rest of the United States by a vast man-made trench in a location known as the Dead Sector, with only walkers and zoo animals to keep him company. He made it his mission to study the undead and record his findings.

During the episode, he encountered a human, Amy (Poppy Liu), who was part of a group that wanted to take the Dead Sector back for the living, a concept that Everett was against. Of course, this leads to problems for both of them.

Everett had three walkers, or Homo Mortuus, as he dubbed them, that he named and kept a closer watch on. Sunflower, the one who was most in tune to sounds, Gamma, his first ever subject, and Specimen 21 (Jeff Barnett), who he fitted with a tracker to keep tabs on.

It would be revealed that Specimen 21 was a man named Dr. Moseley, who Everett worked with before he was killed. He started to believe that 21 had developed some memory retention and other skills not common in the undead. Was this wishful thinking on Everett’s part? Or had the walkers started to evolve?

This episode appears to be set 30 years in the future, as showrunner Channing Powell has stated one episode was set that far into the future. This means Everett has conducted his research for quite some time. Did the walkers evolve, or did he hold out false hope as 21 was someone he was close to?

During the episode, 21 fell into the river onto a raft, and Everett tried to save him. But, as the wildlife had prospered in the area, a huge alligator came along and made 21 his lunch. Below are some amazing behind-the-scenes photos of this episode, including said alligator.
